First introduced by SARS in 2020, the Registration, Licensing and Accreditation (RLA) platform provides a digital facility for Customs and Excise clients to register, license, and manage their profiles. The system has since undergone several enhancements and now serves as SARS’s central platform for all Customs client registrations and updates.
In accordance with the Customs and Excise Act, all previously registered or licensed clients are required to update their information on the RLA system, including those originally onboarded through manual processes.
Why this matters now
As of 25 April 2025, SARS commenced suspending the customs codes of traders who have failed to onboard and update their information on the RLA platform. This effectively prevents affected businesses from importing or exporting goods, leading to delays, financial penalties, and reputational damage.
Additionally, industry stakeholders have reported increased entry rejections at border posts due to incomplete or outdated importer/exporter validations on SARS’s systems. While SARS has acknowledged the issue and is investigating, businesses are strongly advised to ensure that their RLA data (e.g., VAT numbers and customs codes) are correctly validated on eFiling to avoid operational bottlenecks.
No extensions—no exceptions
In recent communication, SARS confirmed that no automatic extensions will be granted for migration to the RLA platform. While extensive guidance and support resources have been made available, all clients are expected to comply, regardless of sector or circumstances. Notably, many businesses may have missed key communications due to outdated registration details, making it even more critical to review and validate all entity information without delay.
What you need to do
Final thoughts
Navigating SARS’s compliance framework continues to present challenges for importers and exporters. However, early and accurate adoption of the RLA platform is now an operational necessity. Businesses that delay this process risk the suspension of customs codes and avoidable disruptions to their supply chains.
