South Africa and its greylisting by the FATF – Where are we one year later?

2024 is already in full swing and the social gatherings and cherished moments with loved ones during the festive season are already forgotten. Without a doubt, many of us have reflected on the past year while also wondering what 2024 holds for us, as well as for South Africa.

So what does 2024 look like for South Africa? If you’re someone who stays informed about current events, your outlook for South Africa in 2024 is likely not positive. With a forecasted unemployment rate of 32.8%, the challenges of unpredictable and persistent loadshedding confronting businesses daily, corruption seemingly out of control, halting the progress of our country, the upcoming election and associated political instability, the rapidly growing debt burden of our country while our government makes one unsustainable promise after another – think of the National Health Insurance and rising social grants – it is almost unthinkable to remain motivated to make 2024 a year of positive impact.

South Africa is undoubtedly in a struggle for survival. And the prospects look bleak. Yet, we have been in similar situations in the past and have come out of them better and stronger each time. What saved us then? Ordinary South Africans standing together. And change. There is a saying that goes “be the change you want to see.” This is the challenge we set for ourselves at ASL this year with one of our staff initiatives called “ASL Be the Change”, and we also extend this challenge to every client, business partner, service provider, and acquaintance. Bring change wherever you perform your daily tasks, or in other words, bloom where you are planted. Never underestimate the ripple effect of a friendly smile to a colleague, a warm cup of coffee to a homeless person at the traffic light, or a bag of dog food for an animal shelter. No war in the history of the world has ever started with a friendly word or an act of kindness. Let’s start a wave of change in our households, our circle of friends, our workplaces, our communities, our villages, our cities, our South Africa.

May we sow seeds of change wherever we go in 2024, and may our harvest be abundant with opportunities, growth, success, and triumph.

ASL Greetings
